How ACCA Manual S Establishes HVAC Equipment Sizing Requirements

ACCA Manual S is an established residential HVAC equipment-selection standard that provides procedures for evaluating heating and cooling equipment against Manual J loads. Using manufacturer performance data at the project's design conditions, Manual S establishes equipment-specific sizing requirements intended to avoid both insufficient and excessive capacity.

Preventing Undersized Equipment

Manual S begins with the heating and cooling loads established by Manual J.

The designer evaluates whether the proposed equipment can provide adequate capacity at the project's design conditions.

This is particularly important for equipment whose available capacity changes with outdoor temperature, indoor operating conditions, or airflow.

A nominal capacity rating alone does not demonstrate that the equipment can satisfy the calculated loads.

Preventing Oversized Equipment

Manual S also establishes requirements intended to limit excessive equipment capacity.

Equipment that exceeds the applicable sizing criteria may not be an acceptable selection simply because it can satisfy the design load.

The allowable sizing provisions depend on the equipment type and relevant requirements of the standard.

This evaluation is particularly important when comparing fixed-capacity, staged, and variable-capacity equipment, which can have different operating characteristics.

Evaluating Equipment at Design Conditions

The Manual J design loads provide the starting point, but they do not establish the actual output of a particular HVAC model.

Manual S evaluates manufacturer performance information appropriate to the selected equipment and the home's heating and cooling design conditions.

For cooling equipment, relevant total and sensible capacities must be considered. For heating equipment, available heating output must be evaluated.

Equipment combinations, airflow, and applicable capacity adjustments can affect the selection.

The final evaluation must reflect the proposed equipment rather than relying on generic nominal ratings.

Maintaining an Accurate Equipment Selection

A Manual S report documents the equipment selected using the available design information.

If the building characteristics change, the Manual J loads may need to be recalculated and the equipment selection reviewed.

Similarly, substituting a different equipment model may require a new performance evaluation.

Manual S does not independently verify installation quality, actual duct performance, or equipment operation after installation.

Its purpose is to establish a technically supported equipment selection that satisfies the applicable requirements before the system is installed.
