How Manual S Determines the Right HVAC Equipment

Manual S determines the right HVAC equipment by comparing manufacturer performance data against the home's Manual J heating and cooling loads and applying the applicable sizing requirements for the equipment type.

Starting with Manual J Loads

The equipment-selection process begins with a completed Manual J calculation. Manual J determines the home's design heating load and cooling load, including the sensible and latent components of cooling.

These loads represent the capacity the HVAC system must address under the specified design conditions. They are not equipment model numbers or nominal tonnage recommendations.

Accurate equipment selection also depends on using the correct outdoor design temperatures, indoor design conditions, and building characteristics established during the load calculation.

Evaluating Equipment Against Design Conditions

The designer identifies candidate equipment and obtains manufacturer performance information for the proposed equipment combination.

For air-conditioning equipment, the evaluation includes available total and sensible cooling capacity at the project's conditions. For heat pumps, heating performance must also be evaluated at the outdoor heating design temperature.

Equipment capacity can vary with airflow, outdoor temperature, indoor conditions, and the selected indoor components. A nominal rating alone cannot establish whether a particular system is suitable.

Applying Manual S Sizing Requirements

Manual S establishes equipment-selection criteria that depend on the type of system being evaluated. A single oversizing percentage does not apply universally to every furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump.

The designer compares the equipment's available capacity with the Manual J loads and applies the relevant Manual S requirements. This includes evaluating sensible and latent cooling performance where applicable.

When a heat pump cannot satisfy the complete heating load at design conditions, the selection must address the appropriate supplemental heating strategy.

Documenting the Equipment Selection

A completed Manual S report should identify the selected equipment, applicable design conditions, calculated loads, and equipment performance information used in the evaluation.

The documentation allows the homeowner, contractor, or permit reviewer to understand the basis for the selection.

Once equipment and its required airflow have been established, Manual D uses the design information to develop the duct system. Equipment selection and duct design are related steps, but they are not interchangeable calculations.
