Manual S Equipment Selection
Manual S Equipment Selection for New Construction Homes
In new construction, Manual S equipment selection is performed before installation using the Manual J loads calculated from the home's plans. Equipment is selected to meet the loads at the project's design conditions before the building is complete.
Equipment Selection Before Construction
New construction provides an opportunity to select HVAC equipment based on the home's planned characteristics rather than an existing system's capacity.
Manual J calculations use construction documents to evaluate insulation, windows, building orientation, infiltration assumptions, and other factors affecting heating and cooling loads.
Manual S then evaluates proposed equipment against those loads using applicable manufacturer performance information.
Because equipment selection occurs before installation, the design team can identify potential sizing or performance concerns before equipment is purchased.
Code and Permit Requirements
Many jurisdictions require residential HVAC equipment to be selected using Manual S, based on loads calculated using Manual J or another approved methodology.
Depending on the jurisdiction, permit submissions may require equipment model numbers, calculated heating and cooling loads, design temperatures, and documentation demonstrating that the selected equipment meets applicable sizing requirements.
Requirements vary by jurisdiction and adopted code edition. Some permit offices also require specific forms or additional supporting documentation.
A Manual S report should reflect the equipment actually proposed for installation, not merely a nominal tonnage selected during preliminary planning.
Coordinating Manual S with Manual D
Manual S establishes the equipment selection and associated design airflow information needed for duct system design.
Manual D uses that information, together with the home's layout and duct design requirements, to size supply and return ductwork.
Equipment selection and duct design should therefore be coordinated. Changing equipment or airflow after duct sizing may require the duct design to be reviewed or revised.
This coordination is particularly important when different equipment models have different airflow capabilities or operating requirements.
Changes After the Initial Equipment Selection
Construction plans may change after the original HVAC design is completed. Revised windows, insulation, conditioned floor area, ceiling heights, or building orientation can affect the Manual J loads.
When changes materially affect those loads, the equipment selection should be reviewed to determine whether the original Manual S remains appropriate.
Equipment substitutions also require attention. A replacement model may have different heating output, cooling capacity, airflow, or operating characteristics, even when its nominal size is unchanged.
Keeping the Manual J, Manual S, and Manual D documents consistent helps avoid discrepancies between the approved design and the equipment ultimately installed.
